When it Feels Personal
An inherent problem in running our own companies is that we personalize them.
We see them as manifestations of our dreams and skills. When something goes wrong, it is easy to assume it is a reflection on our character rather than just the nature of business.
It gets even more personal when we have hired someone and they leave our company under less-than-ideal circumstances. I know many owners that worry that the employee is Out There saying Bad Things. Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t. It doesn’t matter.
One of my favorite quotes:
“What people think of you is none of your business.”
When people are building their business, I often say that you can own a business or everyone can like you- not both.
Not everyone will like you. Not everyone will like your business. People will not like working for you. People will think you are a big jerk. But these are just a small handful.
For every person that does not like you, there are way more that do.
That is why your business is successful. People like what you are offering and how you are offering it. For every employee that leaves disgruntled, there are several others that loved their time in your company.
At the end of the day, it is just business. People will come and they will go. They are entitled to their opinion about their experience and it is a waste of time to worry about it.
You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, but there will always be someone who hates peaches." --Dita Von Teese
